Kaya Baker, Educational Director She/Her/Hers

Kaya is an educator and youth mentor committed to making all feel safe, accepted, and nourished. She believes the act of teaching others about food plants is a means to healing soils, people, and communities.

“This work is not about growing food. Not really. It’s about centering the voices of everyone disadvantaged by America’s legacy of white power-hoarding. It’s about acknowledging ancestral, traditional, and contemporary lands of Indigenous Peoples. It’s about disrupting unjust systems through conversations, unlearning, and reframing narratives; painting, poetry, and dance; strategizing, uniting, and loving.”

Kaya brings to The Big Garden team over 8 years of growing experience across 4 different states. She uses an adaptive management style and collaborative leadership approach to re-imagine how power at a non-profit functions. Kaya has been celebrating seeds and food at The Big Garden since 2019.
